Why eggs for breakfast?

Eggs are a go to breakfast for many Americans. Makes you wonder why eggs are a breakfast favorite. Maybe it's the convenience of being able to crack an egg in your hot pan and watching it cook in seconds. Or maybe because eggs are normally collected first thing in the morning from the hens that lay eggs making it convenient to eat in the mornings. There is no clear answer as to why humans in general eat eggs for breakfast, there are many theories as to why we would choose eggs. In ancient days it is said that the Romans would eat three times a day, but not often. Breakfast being one of their meals which included eggs when they were available. During the middle ages Europeans ate twice a day, usually large meals, to sustain themselves throughout the day. It was thought that eating breakfast was considered gluttony, so eating once or twice a day was normal. Which did not include morning meals, many people would fast the mornings. In 1620, medical writer and physician Tobias Venner suggested that eating poached eggs in the morning might be healthy. The Idea of breakfast was becoming widespread, but it wasn't until the 1800’s that breakfast was becoming popular due to the Industrial Revolution. Workers needed a meal that would sustain them and eggs were on the menu. During the Colonial era in America eggs were becoming favored over corn based meals. In the 1960’s eggs were said to be high in cholesterol by the American Heart Association. They recommended that people shouldn't eat more than 3 eggs a week. With further research later down the line, eggs were seen to be good for your health. They are nutrient dense and can raise your good cholesterol (HDL) which can lower heart disease. A study showed that people who ate two eggs a day during a 6 week study had higher HDL levels by 10%. Of Course everyone doesn't respond to food the same way, so it's always important to be mindful of your consumption of eggs. Eggs are a quick and easy meal pack with protein and many other vital nutrients. You can definitely dress up eggs to be “healthier” instead of always serving it with fatty bacon, a three stack of pancakes drenched in syrup and a bottomless pot of coffee.

What I found

Aside from eggs and breakfast sandwiches, what is your favorite breakfast meal? The other day I asked this question to my local neighbors via online and I got many responses. To my surprise a lot of the suggestions were egg based. Not expecting much interaction from my neighbors, I was inspired by all the interesting foods people eat aside from eggs. With the variety of responses I learned that many people eat little to nothing for breakfast and others have a large king sized meal. It seems like the idea of whether breakfast is important or not never ends. Because of the varied responses I have compiled two lists, one list dividing the meal into ingredients and another list with just the main food source. I will also be including responses that agree with the main response. For example, Jessica writes “I love to eat yogurt” and commenter Cory replies with, “Yes me too!”. As for likes I will exclude them since my question was response based and not a poll.

Results

Here are the results. As you can see Eggs dominated both charts, which surprised me since people seemed to defy the boundaries of my question and still commented they loke to eat eggs. Most people have toast with their meals or have a bagel topped with various items. I personally consider bagels to be the equivalent of toasts, since I prefer to eat them open-faced because it makes more sense to me since they are so bready. As the main meal many people prefer to drink coffee, which is something I practice as well. Sometimes I cannot stomach food, so I drink coffee and have it with a side of pastry as my morning "breakfast". For ingredient wise people love to include other proteins with their eggs. Vegetables were not included in any list since it was very few and typically, they put it in their eggs or on their toast. As well as spreads and extra toppings or seasonings that people included in their meals. Not included in the final results but every variation of meal listed was jotted down in a spread sheet. My favorite breakfasts are, omelettes, sandwiches, and I rarely eat waffles or pancakes for breakfast. Sometimes I also like ramen with corn, peas, and scrambled eggs. I can’t really meat for breakfast because it’s too heavy for the morning I usually eat light so i think that’s why. Anyway thank you for the post kawaii bunny! As always I loved it. 😃
